Why Dr. Robbins
Licensed Clinical Psychologist · Psy.D., HSPP

I provide evidence-based couples counseling tailored to the unique needs of each relationship. My approach is informed by the Gottman Method and combines a warm, collaborative style with a structured process designed to help couples make meaningful progress.

Rather than simply talking through problems, we identify the patterns that keep your relationship stuck and develop practical skills and exercises you can apply between sessions to strengthen communication, rebuild connection, and create lasting change. My goal is to help you better understand one another, communicate more effectively, and build a healthier, more satisfying relationship.

What to Expect

A clear, structured path forward

1

Understanding your relationship

The first three sessions build a comprehensive picture of your relationship — your history together, the concerns that brought you in, your strengths as a couple, and the patterns contributing to conflict or disconnection. This lets me tailor treatment to your needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

2

Creating a personalized plan

Together we identify clear goals and build a plan that reflects what you hope to accomplish. We prioritize the areas that matter most to your relationship and establish a structured roadmap for moving forward.

3

Learning skills for lasting change

You'll learn practical, research-based strategies to improve communication, manage conflict, strengthen emotional connection, rebuild trust when needed, and build healthier patterns — with a focus on applying what you learn outside the therapy office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers before you begin

What if my spouse doesn't want counseling?

It's common for one partner to be more hesitant than the other. If your spouse is reluctant, start the conversation without pressure and focus on your shared goal of improving the relationship. Even if your partner isn't ready today, many couples begin therapy after having time to consider the benefits.

Do you accept insurance?

I am a private-pay practice and do not bill insurance. This lets us focus entirely on your treatment without insurance restrictions, diagnosis requirements, or session limits. A superbill can be provided upon request if you wish to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Will you take sides?

No. My role is not to determine who is right or wrong. Instead, I work to understand each partner's perspective, identify the patterns that contribute to conflict, and help both of you develop healthier ways of communicating and working together.

How long are sessions?

Most couples sessions are approximately 50–55 minutes. The first appointment is often 90 minutes to allow enough time for treatment planning.

How many sessions do most couples attend?

It varies depending on your goals and the challenges you're facing. Some couples notice meaningful improvement in a relatively short period, while others choose to continue longer to strengthen communication and maintain progress.

Can we attend virtually?

Yes. I offer secure telehealth appointments for couples, as well as in-person sessions at my Carmel office.

What if we're not married?

Couples counseling is beneficial for partners in all stages of a relationship — dating, engaged, long-term committed, and married. The focus is on strengthening your relationship, regardless of marital status.

Can couples counseling help after infidelity?

Yes. While rebuilding trust takes time and commitment from both partners, many couples are able to work through the effects of an affair. Therapy provides a structured process for understanding what happened, rebuilding safety, improving communication, and deciding together how to move forward.

Is it ever too late to improve a relationship?

Not necessarily. While no therapist can guarantee a particular outcome, many couples seek counseling after months or even years of struggling. The earlier concerns are addressed the better, but meaningful change is still possible when both partners are willing to engage in the process.

What happens during the first appointment?

The first session focuses on understanding your relationship — your history together, the concerns that brought you in, your strengths as a couple, and what you hope to accomplish. This information helps create a treatment plan tailored to your specific relationship.

Do we have to be in crisis to benefit from couples counseling?

Not at all. Many couples seek counseling before problems become overwhelming. Therapy can strengthen communication, deepen connection, navigate life transitions, and build skills that support a healthier relationship for years to come. Early intervention often makes change easier and can prevent small issues from becoming larger ones.
